Letter to Neighbors about Lawn machinery and alternatives

Some of your neighbors have chosen to decrease the noise and environmental
pollution in the neighborhood. We’d like you to consider joining us.

We’ve decided to avoid using gas powered yard machinery during weekly garden and yard
cleanups. Yes, this is possible. Communities across the United States are banning gas powered
leaf blowers and, increasingly, professional landscapers are offering quiet, environmentally
friendly services. If you do your own yard work, then it’s even easier to “go green.” A number of
us already use battery, plug-in, or human powered equipment.

For a fuller discussion of the
science and economics behind this, I recommend taking a look here:
https://agza.net/agza-residential-green-zone-initiative/

Over the coming weeks and months, you’ll be seeing “Green Zone” signs appearing on
neighborhood properties. Green Zone yards are gas-free areas that avoid unnecessary toxic
chemicals and noisy yard equipment. Again, you may read all about this in detail at the link cited
earlier.

Here’s what the signs look like:

And if you’re worried about those big fall leaf clean-ups, they are not considered weekly “routine
maintenance” and, therefore, not covered by the gas ban, although we hope that with time, you
may accept that even heavy clean-ups can be handled without noisy, polluting equipment. We
are also working with AGZA to create a list of “green” maintenance pros who can handle the
larger cleanups.

If you are interested in a quieter, greener, more harmonious neighborhood, please join the
Green Zone initiative. Contact one of us or follow the steps outlined in the AGZA web link.
